The All Golds play their first home game of the league season against Keighley Cougars this Sunday.

The home side will be boosted by the return of Alex Gaskell, Phil Cowburn and Chris Barlow who all missed out against Hunslet last Sunday with illness. However, the news on half-back Ben Stead isn’t as promising – he looks set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury halfway through the 10-6 defeat against Hunslet.

The Golden Fern came close to upsetting Hunslet last weekend and head coach Lee Greenwood is hoping to go one better this weekend when his team hosts one of the favourites for promotion. He said: “It’s another tough game for us but we’re looking forward to it. On another day we could have won at Hunslet. I can’t knock the effort and the attitude that the players showed. We had three players miss the game with sickness but they’ll be back for Sunday which is a big boost for us.

“Keighley have recruited really well. They’ve got some dangerous players that we’ll need to keep an eye on. They had a good win last weekend and will come down full of confidence. They started really well on Sunday – everything they tried seemed to come off for them – so we know we’ll need to be focused from the off.

“We’re confident now though that we don’t need to worry too much about the opposition. We’ve got players in our squad that can cause problems. Physically we look strong and fit and I keep on saying it but there’s a different mentality in this squad to in previous seasons. We want to make sure we keep standards high. We’re not happy to just be competing with the best teams in this division, we wan’t to be beating them. You could see the players were disappointed to lose to Hunslet, that’s the attitude we want them to have.”

Keighley have made a perfect start to the new campaign. They beat Doncaster 30-22 in the League 1 Cup and backed that up with a win against amateur side Fryston Warriors in a feisty Challenge Cup clash the following week. Last Sunday they trounced North Wales Crusaders 50-8 in their opening league game of the new season.

During Keighley’s game against Fryston Emmerson Whittel sustained a serious jaw injury which is set to rule him out of action for three months. Before joining Keighley Emmerson had two seasons with us and we wish him all the best for a swift recovery. A page has been set up if you’d like to donate to help Emmerson out in this difficult time.
