The All Golds face Workington Town at Derwent Park tomorrow in the quarter-final of the League 1 Cup.
It’ll be the second successive weekend the Golden Fern will square off against Workington, they’ll be hoping to do better than last Sunday’s 54-22 loss in the league. After an hour of that game the All Golds were only two points down but a late flourish from the home side inflicted a heavy defeat on Lee Greenwood’s men. However, the All Golds head coach sees tomorrow’s game as a perfect opportunity to put right the wrongs of last Sunday. He said: “Of course it was really disappointing to lose by so many, it’s easy to say tiredness was the reason but it wasn’t. We switched off in key moments and Workington punished us.
“They’re a very good side with a lot of talented players. We know we let ourselves down in that last quarter, the players don’t need me to tell them that. Losing Alex Gaskell so early on last week really hurt us and we’ll have to shuffle players around tomorrow. Phil Cowburn will start at full-back, he’s been playing really well at centre and I would have preferred to have kept him there but he’s comfortable at full-back.”
Irish international Graham O’Keeffe could feature after a nightmare run of injuries. The forward hasn’t played since rupturing his ACL ligament last May. Luke Stephens and Danny Fallon, two players who have excelled for UGRL this season, could also be involved. The knee injury Ben Stead suffered at Hunslet means he’ll be missing which means Jack Mitchell and Kieran Hyde look set to resume their partnership in the halves. “We’re missing a few but that gives other players opportunities to impress. We’re a small squad and injuries have hurt us but the coaching staff have got faith in the players that will come in. They wouldn’t be here if they weren’t up to it”, said Greenwood.
