New signing Alex Gaskell says he’s thrilled with how his first month as an All Golds’ player has gone.

After joining the Golden Fern last autumn Alex has made a fast start at his new club. He made his debut in the League 1 cup tie at Hemel Stags last month and it didn’t take him long to score his first try – he stepped over the whitewash in the 45th minute of the 48-12 thrashing of Hemel. He was in try scoring action a week later in the Challenge Cup victory over North Wales Crusaders as well, and the full-back says he couldn’t be happier with how his first five games have gone. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my first games for the All Golds, we’ve come away with some good performances and some good wins as a result. I’m just trying to get better and improve each week.”

A full-back is often the most complete player in the team and Gaskell’s pace has been a weapon that has seen him excel in both attack and defence. Alex, who was born in Guildford, says he relishes the responsibility that comes with wearing the number one jersey. “I’m enjoying playing at full-back a lot, it’s great to play in a position with plenty of involvement. I’ve not played a lot of game time there before but I’m looking forward to getting more familiar with the position.”

The former Wigan and Salford academy player added: “Many people were surprised that we beat Crusaders and Keighley so easily but we know how hard we all worked during pre-season so to the players and coaching staff were expecting big performances. The performance against Keighley was my favourite moment of the season so far. It was a great team performance and one that we need to be looking to repeat every weekend.

“There’s a good atmosphere at the club. We’re lucky to have three top class coaches in Lee, Anthony and Dan who have all helped me improve my game. It’s really good to be able to get feedback from all of them, it helps your development as a player. I feel like I’ve settled in well but there’s plenty of hard work ahead, starting with Workington tomorrow.”
